Bennett fled the original crime scene and barricaded himself in a separate nearby residence, according to allegations in the media release. While working to get a warrant for the residence, officers discovered Bennett had an active, unrelated warrant for felon in possession of a firearm. Officers set a perimeter around the secondary crime scene and called in the SWAT and crisis negotiations teams. Crisis negotiators made contact with Bennett and negotiated for several hours in an attempt to take him into custody peacefully. The SWAT team deployed gas multiple times into the residence, according to the statement. At some point, Bennett, holding the weapon, exited the residence, according to alleagtions. Officers commanded Bennett to discard the weapon multiple times and used a less lethal impact weapon that was ineffective.
